The United States has expressed its readiness to get involved together with the European Union troika in direct negotiations with Iran on the critical issue of processing and enrichment of nuclear fuel, the Croatian ministry said in a statement.
"The readiness of the United States of America to pursue direct talks with Iran after decades of interrupted diplomatic communication gives the hope of settling this sensitive issue of regional and international security. Direct American-Iranian dialogue will provide the two countries with an opportunity to discuss other bilateral issues, which is of particular importance for strengthening peace, cooperation and democratic dialogue, especially in the light of the current situation in the Middle East," the statement said.
The US said it would join the talks on condition that Iran stopped its uranium enrichment programme.
Considering the wider political importance of direct talks, Croatia expects a responsible approach from Iran and calls on the government in Tehran to ensure conditions for opening dialogue as soon as possible in the spirit of confidence and respect, the statement said.
Croatia also welcomed the fact that this issue confirmed the importance of cooperation between the United States and the European Union.
