EU envoy disappointed by behaviour of Montenegro's pro-union bloc

PODGORICA, May 24 (Hina) - The European Union's envoy for the Montenegro independence referendum, Miroslav Lajcak, has expressed his disappointment by the behaviour of pro-Serbian unionists after Sunday's vote.
PODGORICA, May 24 (Hina) - The European Union's envoy for the Montenegro independence referendum, Miroslav Lajcak, has expressed his disappointment by the behaviour of pro-Serbian unionists after Sunday's vote.

Stories of stolen votes are irresponsible. They have the right to complain, but not to deliver a verdict, because that is the job of the Montenegrin Referendum Commission and the Constitutional Court, the Slovak diplomat was quoted by electronic media in Podgorica as saying on Wednesday.

Lajcak said it was not clear to him why supporters of the Serbia and Montenegro State Union had asked the EU to mediate in the referendum process if right from the start they were not prepared to respect the rules.

The EU envoy said he was encouraged by his talks with Serbian officials in Belgrade on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said the Serbian government was ready to become involved in the further political process after the final results of the referendum were determined, he added.

It is important that all issues should be settled in the European spirit, Lajcak stressed.
