Ferry services were discontinued owing to the war 16 years ago.
Currently, a ferry owned by the Osijek-based Vodogradnja company is being used for connecting the two river banks. The construction of a modern ferry for this purpose is under way and this is being financed by the Kingdom of the Netherlands that initiated the renewal of ferry services between Vukovar and Bac two years ago.
This ferry will connect people on both banks and enable children to go to school on the other side, farmers to cultivate untended land and will also help strengthen family connections and develop the economy, the Dutch Ambassador to Croatia, Nienke Trooster, said on this occasion.
She added that her country would like to help Croatia and Serbia in other infrastructure projects with the aim of supporting their European ambitions.
Vukovar Mayor Zdenka Buljan said the interest of Vukovar residents was to establish communication with nearby areas.
Although it passed through suffering and hardship during the Homeland Defence War, Vukovar today is a city marked by tolerance and a conflict-free climate, the mayor added.
An official of the Serbian government said that the re-establishment of the ferry line between Vukovar and Bac was the best example that the two countries could achieve progress and social well-being through cooperation.
The ceremony, which gathered officials of the two countries, local representatives and OSCE officials, began with the anthems of Croatia and Serbia.
The ferry transport will be free of charge in the next three months. The ferry can be used by locals who hold cross-border permits.
