ZAGREB, Jan 25 (Hina) - The Council for the Civilian Control of
Security Services concluded on Thursday there had been nothing illegal about
the background check on Sandra Bencic, a candidate for the Council for the
Development of Civil Society, carried out by the Security and Intelligence
Agency (SOA) at the request of the former chief of the government's Office for
Associations Jadranka Cigelj. The acting chairman of the Council for
the Civilian Control of Security Services, Mile Culumovic, told the press that
after probing the SOA it concluded that the background check had been
legal.
It was established, however, with one vote against, that an SOA agent
had committed irregularities which violated Bencic's human rights.
The Council will send its conclusion to the parliamentary Committee on
Home Affairs and National Security as soon as possible, said Culumovic.
Committee chairman Ivan Jarnjak told the press he had requested the
Council for the Civilian Control of Security Services to investigate Social
Democrat deputy Milanka Opacic's allegations about security checks on
opposition members of parliament.
