Mesic says it's good Radicals won't be forming Serbia's new government

ZAGREB, Jan 22 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said on Monday it was positive that the nationalist Serbian Radical Party (SRS) would not be able to form Serbia's new government, which he said would be dangerous for Croatia given the party's claims to Croatian territory.

Commenting on yesterday's parliamentary elections in Serbia, Mesic recalled that during the election campaign the SRS again said it saw the Serbian border stretching along the Virovitica-Karlovac-Karlobag line.

"Everyone making such statements during the campaign is dangerous for the entire region," Mesic said in Fericanci in eastern Croatia, where he attended a traditional wine-tasting event.

According to the first official results released by the Serbian Election Commission, the ultranationalist SRS won the majority of the vote, 28.3 per cent, but this is not enough for it to independently form the new government. Several democratic parties together won sufficient votes to form the government, provided they settle mutual disagreements.

"I expect the parties which are on the other side, which are pro-European, to settle the few issues still encumbering Serbia, such as cooperation with the Hague tribunal and the extradition of all who are responsible for the crimes committed in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina," said Mesic.
