ZAGREB, March 16 (Hina) - The chairwoman of the Croatian parliament's internal policy and national security committee, Djurdja Adlesic, on Friday received General Jean-Pierre Kelche, the French army's headquarters chief-of-staff, the
Sabor press office reported. Adlesic informed the French guest of the committee's work and authorities which have been broadened under recent constitutional changes. They discussed the shortening of the period for the obligatory military service and the professionalisation of armed forces in order to achieve NATO standards. General Kelche explained that small countries were not expected to make great investments into typical armed forces but to train specialised units that would have their particular place in the defence system of Europe as well as within NATO. In this contest he was interested in Croatia's intentions. It is necessary to reorganise and modernise Croatia's Armed Forces, the French general agreed and added that, however, the earmarking of financial means into the purchase of equipment must be in accordance with national needs and abilities.(hina) sb ms
