Merino fleece prices were mixed, with the 19/20 micron indicators up to 1.0 percent cheaper. The 21/22m categories were 0.5 percent cheaper while 23/24/26m were 0.5 percent dearer and 25m 1.0 percent dearer, WI said. Merino skirtings were unchanged. In crossbreds, 27/28/30m were 0.5 percent dearer, 29m was 1.0 percent dearer and 31m slightly dearer, it said. Crossbred skirtings were firm. In cardings, lambs were slightly cheaper, locks unchanged and crutchings 1.5 percent dearer. WI said Japanese, Chinese and Western European interests were principal buyers with support from Taiwan. Of the 25,164 bales offered in both centres, 5.2 percent were passed in. Traders said the market had been ruffled by sterling's fluctuations against the U.S dollar and other primary market currencies. The renewed strength of the Aussie was said to be behind the pick-up in finer tops values. "Buyers (in the blended sector) seem wary of moving in at the moment, as sterling could yet push imported wool costs down," one said. Topmakers working exclusively with homegrown wools are benefitting from healthier consumer demand in the UK, shown in consistently firm prices for English types.
