RTRS-Australia wool test volume slightly up - AWTA
SYDNEY, Nov 11 (Reuter) - Australian Wool Testing Authority
Ltd has tested 1.1 percent more wool in the first four months of
the 1996/97 season than in the previous corresponding period,
spokesman Peter Morgan said in a statement.
The quality of superfine wool tested was the same as for the
equivalent period last year, a drought year, he said.
This implied that superfine woolgrowers had maintained
production despite significant declines in superfine wool
prices, he said.
The quantity of wool tested for length and strength had
risen to 79 percent of all combing wool, up from 72.8 percent
last year, he said.
Vegetable matter content was averaging two percent, up from
1.6 percent, reflecting better seasonal conditions, while mean
fibre diameter had strengthened marginally to 22 microns, he
said.
While staple length was slightly shorter, staple strength
was stronger nationally but marginally weaker in Queensland,
South Australia (SA) and Western Australia (WA), he said.
There were wide differences in the quantity of wool tested
from different states compared with last year, with Tasmania,
Victoria and New South Wales up but Queensland, WA and SA down.

Bradford wool market sees prices largely unchanged
BRADFORD, Nov 11 (Reuter) - Tops prices were unchanged on
Monday with the exception of English 58s and 56s which fell one
pence per kg, trade sources said.
With little dramatic movement in sterling against the mark
and resistance pegged at around 2.49, the market remained fairly
calm.
The marginal easing in values for English types was
generally taken as a sign that the price rise for raw-state
topmaking wools at the last UK auction would not be maintained
at the next sale on 13th November.
But some sources are growing nervous about the tame level of
trade as the Christmas recess nears.
"Although producers are reluctant to accept bid below costs,
this kind of business is still being done," one source said.
