Deliveries were said to be going out well and machinery was keeping active. Traders expressed nervousness over the strength of the pound sterling and talk of further UK interest rate rises that might undermine export competitiveness. Effects on import prices mean that retailers can prefer to wait for slightly cheaper wool in UK terms to have an effect or, even more unsatisfactory, be tempted to buy imported clothing. With the wool market itself not encouraging new business, prices were seen as more likely to slip than firm. ct as this could curb economic recovery. 191058 MET nov 96
