The December contract failed to maintain gains above 73.00, but firmer resistance was seen at 74.00, where producer selling is likely to emerge. An options trader noted steady call buying and put selling, which helped fuel prices higher. December cotton closed up 1.11 to 72.08, traded 73.05 to 71.20. The back months ended 0.90 to 0.60 higher. Volume was estimated at a brisk 20,000 lots. Market sources said the December contract found firm support at 70.00 earlier this week and could remain rangebound in the near term. "We just found a bottom so we'll probably trade sideways and the downtrend will ease up a bit," a dealer said. Expectations that the U.S. Department of Agriculture would report brisk weekly sales Friday added support to the market, dealers said. They cited talk of sales to China, but that business would not appear in Friday's report. O.A. Cleveland, a marketing specialist with Mississippi State University, said some players have already begun to look ahead to next year's plantings. Lower prices will discourage growers from planting cotton, he said, pegging plantings in 1997 around 13.3 million acres, compared with 14.2 million this year. "That concern may be holding up new crop futures and giving some support to the old crop," Cleveland said. 151045 MET nov 96
