Short covering kept the contract support in late trade and the active went out 0.90 lower at 72.05. Players appeared to dismiss the U.S. Department of Agriculture's weekly export and sales report, which pegged new sales at 270,500 480-lb bales, for the week ended Oct 24. While the number suggests strong exports, analysts cited the market's drop to 71.15 on October 21. Imports for the week reached only 3,362 bales, an indication that the season's earlier flood of foreign cotton has finally slowed. December ended down 0.90 at 72.05, having ranged from 73.45 to 72.00. The deferred months finished 0.99 to 0.01 lower. Volume was estimated at 12,000 lots. Resistance remained at 73.50 in December, where trade selling is likely to emerge, dealers said. 011648 MET nov 96
