"Everyone is used to a bear market in cocoa and everytime it rallied everyone sold," said Allendale Commodities analyst Jim Cordier. "But I think this market has turned a corner because the fundamentals have changed." Most-active May futures surged $59 a tonne -- or more than four percent -- on the day, to close at $1,451, having traded from $1,459 to $1,408. July also finished $59 higher, at $1,472, while the rest soared $50 to $59. Cordier said remarks by Phibro director Anthony Ward on Monday helped to spark bullish sentiment. Ward said that he believed London prices could hit 1,500 stg a tonne because of a structural deficit. On Tuesday, London's key May contract closed at 1,010 stg, up 29 stg. Ward declined to comment on whether Phibro, a major player in cocoa market, holds a large physical position in the market, but his comments suggested Phibro would hold stocks as part of a long term strategy. "We finally have a trade house holding on to cocoa and saying we're not going to let it go," said Cordier. "Before, everyone pooh-poohed talk about deficits." From a technical stance, Cordier said the cocoa market also appeared bullish. "If the market closes above $1,450 for two days it will confirm the breakaway gap and the days of $1,300 and $1,200 cocoa will be long behind us," he said. "The next stop is $1,600." But other market participants said after cocoa's torrid two-day rally, which saw prices spike up some 10 percent, the market may be due for a correction. An estimated 25,754 lots changed hands on the day, up from Monday's official total of 22,854 lots. After Tuesday's close, the CSCE said effective March 12 it will raise margins on all cocoa contracts to $700, an increase of $300 from current levels. 121108 MET mar 97
