All sectors finished easier following a sharply lower opening in Chicago. Futures in North America came under pressure following the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Taiwan's pig population which has reduced demand for U.S. soymeal. Some of the weakness was also traced to reports that Taiwan might be reselling excess soymeal to China. "There was a growing feeling that sentiment was about to change in Chicago, if the funds could be got out of the way, before the Taiwan outbreak," said one trader. Traders in Europe and other parts of the world have been complaining that U.S. soybeans and products have been overpriced for some weeks. Last week, before news of the outbreak of foot and mouth, Taiwan rejected U.S. soybeans at one tender and excluded them from the next because they were too expensive. Earlier traders said palm oil appeared to be consolidating both in Europe and the Far East ahead of export data due for release on Tuesday. "People are waiting to see the export data and its a short week," said a trader. Malaysian cargo surveyor SGS is due to release its estimate for March 1-25 on Tuesday. At the close of business crude palm oil cif Europe was $2.50 down after Jul/Sep traded at $546 a tonne cif and Mar/Apr traded in switch with May/Jul at even money, but traders could give no further details. Products were $2.50 to $5 down with no further business reported. Coconut oil closed $2.50 down to unchanged on a tradeless market while palmkernel oil was $5 to $7.50 lower after Jun/Jul traded at $717.50 a tonne cif. In soft oils soy and rape oil closed 0.50 to one guilder down after Aug/Oct rape oil traded at 100.50 and 100.25 guilders a 100 kilos fob Malaysia.
