But a late-session round of speculative buying lifted prices off the day's lows, traders said. "I think the market was overbought," said Refco Inc analyst Ann Prendergast. "But I look for the market to recover and resume an uptrend" Most-active May futures ended $23 a tonne lower, at $1,459, after ranging from $1,485 to $1,446. July finished down $19, to $1,485, while the back months fell $7 to $18. The market headed lower at the outset, defying pre-opening expections, as trade and arbitrage-linked selling pressured prices. Traders said downward momentum accelerated after the May contract breached $1,455, activating sell-stops. Refco's Prendergast said an upward reassessment of the Ivorian cocoa crop by broker GNI put a "crimp in the bullish mood." GNI said Tuesday that arrivals data pointed to a total Ivorian 1996/97 cocoa crop of at least 1.1 million tonnes. The estimate would indicate a rise of 150,000 tonnes on GNI's last projection in January, although it has not yet officially revised its crop outlook. Last week, Ivorian Commodities Minister Guy-Alain Gauze forecast the total harvest at less than one million tonnes. Technically, dealers said May near-term support was seen at $1,448-$1,446. Resistance was pegged near Monday's high of $1,490. While Prendergast expects the market to test the $1,500 level basis May, she said in order for May to breach its life-of-contract high of $1,526 some friendly fundamental input would be needed. Volume reached an estimated 9,579 lots, down from Monday's official tally of 11,409 lots. 191030 MET mar 97
