Zinc, nickel rallies take LME spotlight
LONDON, Jan 31 (Reuter) - Zinc and nickel flipped higher in
Friday ring trading as investment funds poured money into the
markets, while renewed spread activity kept copper steady.
Zinc powered to its highest levels in two years when funds
re-entered a market buoyed by market tightness.
LME stocks fell by 1,450 tonnes on Friday when the market was
expecting a modest increase and a tender on Thursday by the US
Mint commanded firm prices, reflecting solid physical interest.
Analysts say the concentrate market is tight and output at
smelters may have to be cut back in coming months.
"'Arctic' concentrates should mostly be worked off by April,
and with the Anvil Range Faro mine probably out until at least
mid-year, the concentrates market could get very tight," said
Larry Kaplan of Flemings Global Mining Group.
Three months prices touched $1,174, the highest since January
27, 1995, when the market peaked at $1,196, before ending the
morning kerb $24 higher at $1,160.
"It sliced through three or four levels of resistance, but we
may have some trouble where we are now. There was supposed to be
producer selling around 53 cents a pound ($1,168/tonne)," a
floor trader said.
Funds also piled into the nickel market, which zoomed up to
the strongest levels since September 11, 1996.
Three months prices attained a summit of $7,640, a gain of
$345, before finishing the morning $235 stronger at $7,530. The
next target was pegged as the September high at $7,820.
Copper three months came off its low of $2,140 and settled
just under Thursday's closing levels, shruggiing off a stocks
rise of 26,100 tonnes as nearby spreads traded at heated levels.
The last trade was $2,156, off $4.
Once again, players who waited to borrow against the previous
day's prompt (tom/next) paid the LME-imposed limit of $24, while
cash commanded a $23 premium over the next day. The LME has
capped these two spreads at one percent of the previous day's
cash settlement price.
But after several days of narrowing, the cash/three months
differential gained about $10 to $210/$220.
"We've had some borrowing in the Feb/threes, which I've heard
is from the Chinese. Not a lot of volume, but enough to keep
things firm," one floor trader said.
The Feb/threes backwardation narrowed to about $30 at one
point on Thursday but finished Friday's afternoon kerb at
$52/$57.
Aluminium held to a tight range, briefly getting a shot of
confidence from a 10,750-tonne stocks fall, but after failing to
surmount $1,625 resistance finished the morning little changed
at $3 higher at $1,617.
More consolidation was probably needed before aluminium could
resume its upward track, analysts said.
Lead and tin followed the pattern in aluminium, trying higher
levels after stock falls but settling at barely different
prices.
Lead touched $681 before ending the morning at $675, up $2,
while tin ran up to $5,950 before closing the kerb at $5,860, up
$40.
Alloy finished the morning unchanged at $1,520.
