UNMO'S TO ARRIVE IN BRCKO THIS WEEKEND

Autor:
ZAGREB, May 6 (Hina) - The Zagreb-based UNPROFOR Division of Information and Office of the Spokesman issued a press release on Friday in connection with the arrival of UN military observers (UNMOs) at the part of the Brcko area which is controlled by Bosnian Serb forces. "Following discussions between the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Yasushi Akashi, and the leader of the Bosnian Serbs Radovan Karadzic, in Pale on Tuesday, 3 May 1994, plans are in place for the deployment of UNMOs to Brcko this weekend. This is part of UNPROFOR's efforts to defuse tension in the Brcko area," said the press release. "Under the direction of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, the Head of Civil Affairs, Sergio Vieira de Mello, held talks yesterday, Thursday, 5 May 1994, with local Serb authorities in Brcko during which agreements were made for the immediate deployment of the UNMOs. Sixteen UNMOs will be deployed in teams to four observation posts in Serb-held areas around Brcko. Seven UNMOs are scheduled to arrive in Brcko on Saturday, 7 May 1994, and nine UNMOs are to arrive on Sunday, 8 May 1994," the press release further said. "In addition to this deployment, there are 14 UNMOs in the vicinity of Brcko: six in Orasje, in Croatian-controlled areas, and eight in Moslem-controlled Maoca. This will bring the total number of UNMOs deployed in the area to 30. Yesterday's agreement in Brcko follows discussions between Akashi and Karadzic during which unimpeded access for UNMOs into the Brcko area was discussed. This latest UNMO deployment by UNPROFOR is aimed at preventing any outbreask of hostilities in the Brcko area," concluded the press release. 061849 MET may 94
