SARAJEVO MEDIA ON FRENCH PROPOSAL FOR TRIPARTITE SUMMIT

SARAJEVO, Feb 8 (Hina) - A proposal by French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe to call a tripartite meeting of presidents of Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia in a bid to restart the peace process, became the subject of media commentaries in Sarajevo only after President Alija Izetbegovic took a stand on it. In an interview with Bosnian television on Tuesday, Izetbegovic said he was prepared to meet Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic only if Belgrade recognized the independence and territorial integrity of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Today's issue of the daily Oslobodjenje carried a few articles supporting the idea of a tripartite summit. "Even if all requirements by the Contact Group were met, it would not be a just peace. There will be no just peace here," Izetbegovic said, adding, however, that the continuation of war would be even greater injustice than an unjust peace. Sarajevo media recalled that a sudden visit by French President Francois Mitterand to Sarajevo in 1992 only raised people's hopes and left them unfulfilled. If Mitternad wanted to round up his political career by chairing the meeting of Tudjman, Izetbegovic and Milosevic, then he should offer something more than just symathy with victims of Serbian expansionism, media said.
