BELI MANASTIR (Hina) - Serb parents of Vukovar, not satisfied with
the situation in the schools in the Croatian Danube river area,
announced that as of Monday (November 10) they would not send their
children to primary and secondary schools in the region, a local
television broadcast on Saturday evening.
The parents held a meeting in Vukovar on Friday evening when they
decided to cease classes on 10 November till a meeting between Serb
representatives and officials of the Croatian Education Ministry
officials and UN Transitional Administration of the region
(UNTAES) which should revolve round Serb demands, the television
added.
At their meeting parents read a letter asking that the Education
Ministry replace non-Serb headmasters with Serb ones. They also
insisted that Serb school books would be delivered soon and that an
agreed-upon moratorium on learning a period of Croatian history
since 1990 up to now should be complied with. They asked that school
documentation be in the two languages.
The local television said that present at the meeting were the
president of the joint council of the (Serb) municipalities, Milos
Vojnovic, and an MP and the president of the Serb Democratic
Independent Party (SDSS) Vojislav Stanimirovic.
Stanimirovic called on the parents not to boycott classes as the
meeting between Education Ministry officials, UNTAES and Serb
representatives, on which they insisted, was convened for the
following week.
