ZAGREB/VUKOVAR, Nov 3 (Hina) - A union of Homeland War victims
associations on Monday demanded of the UN transitional
administrator for eastern Croatia and the chairwoman of the
National Committee for the restoration of trust to be enabled to
hold a commemoration in Vukovar on the occasion of 18 November 1991,
the day when Vukovar was occupied.
"We are notifying you that we are organizing a commemoration in
Vukovar. We demand that you do everything to provide security
conditions and to keep the dignity of the gathering", said a letter
the union forwarded to UN transitional administrator William
Walker and National Committee chairwoman Vesna Skare Ozbolt.
The letter was signed by union president Branko Borkovic, the last
commander of Vukovar's defense.
According to the union's plan, the commemoration of the Vukovar
tragedy's six anniversary would begin on 18 November with wreath-
laying at Vukovar's Novo Groblje cemetery, with addresses by
Croatian civilian and military authorities. A mass service would
follow.
The commemoration would continue with an expert conference
entitled "On Vukovar in Vukovar - On the Paths of the Peaceful
Reintegration". Experts would speak about relations between
national groups in Vukovar before the war, the standpoints of
Croatian displaced persons on the peaceful reintegration, the
psychological consequences of war in Vukovar, and the relation
between forgiving and justice, tolerance and dignity.
