BELGRADE, March 6 (Hina) - Transitional Administrator of the
Croatian Danubian area, Jacques Klein, on Thursday said to
reporters in Belgrade that he had held talks today with Serbian
President Slobodan Milosevic on forthcoming elections in Croatia.
Klein confirmed that the elections in the Croatian Danubian
area would be held when they were to be held in entire Croatia - on
April 13.
UN Transitional Administrator added that he had asked Serbian
President to continue offering his support to the process of
reintegration of the Croatian Danubian area.
Klein also said that he had notified President Milosevic of
areas of municipalities as well as of the Croatian Government's
Letter of Intent approved by the UN Security Council.
The situation was such that people were cynical and
suspicious, to some extent, when they spoke about elections. We had
to persuade them that for the first time they had the real
opportunity of deciding on their future, Klein said.
He described the situation in the region as stable.
Speaking of the building of confidence, he portrayed as very
important the fact that there was Transitional Police with which
600 Croatian policemen were serving as well.
Klein added that confidence may be built also in different
institutions and that the local population had guarantees for
employment
Klein said he had talked with Milosevic about demilitarisation
of the area. He claimed that both Federal Republic of Yugoslavia
and Croatia as well as Hungary would benefit from it.
People in the region requested the answer whether the region
would be demilitarised, how the border would look like and whether
it would be open enough as well as whether dual citizenship would
be possible. Some people would, no doubt, leave for this or that
reason, Klein said. He added that he believed that most of them
would stay, if they were guaranteed security and if Croatia acted
consistently in this regard.
He said that he saw farmers working in fields while he was
travelling to Belgrade. If they sowed and spent money, this meant
that they would stay until the harvest, Klein added.
