OSIJEK, March 4 (Hina) - The Association of Croatian Displaced Persons on
Tuesday urged all displaced people to vote in the UN-administered Danube
river region to help in the restoration of Croatian authority there.
The Osijek-based organization issued an electoral proclamation under
the slogans "The Danube Is Our Goal" and "The Elections Are the Displaced
People's Last Political Battle."
The proclamation said that the upcoming local elections were very
important for the final reintegration of the region into Croatia and for the
creation of conditions for the return of displaced people.
The elections, scheduled for April 13, are a condition for the
completion of the UNTAES mandate by July 15 and the departure of the UNTAES
military component and the UN Transitional Administrator, after which
Croatian police will assume control of the Croatian border, it said.
The Association said that by going to the polls, the displaced people
would make their contribution to the final establishment of Croatian
authority in the Danube region.
