ZAGREB, Feb 7 (Hina) - The Croatian Parliament's House of Representatives on
Friday began a discussion on draft amendments to the Telecommunications Act.
The amendments were proposed by Mato Arlovic of the Social Democratic
Party, who said that in granting broadcasting licences advantage should be
given to the already operating radio stations.
Arlovic stressed that it was necessary that members of the
Telecommunications Councils should be appointed by a competent parliament
committee rather than by the government. According to his proposal, Council
members would continue to be approved by the lower house of parliament.
The amendments were backed by opposition deputies. However, the
Minister of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Communications, Zeljko Luzavec,
said that the government opposed the amendments.
