ARNOLD ON ORGANISATION OF PRE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN IN E.SLAVONIA

ZAGREB, Feb 13 (Hina) - A spokesman for UNTAES, Philippe Arnold, on Thursday gave an interview with Croatian Television central news broadcast. Asked how and where Croatian political parties could participate in the pre-election campaign in the UNTAES-controlled Croatian Danubian area, Arnold replied that they would organise media activities on television and radio and that Croatian politicians would have to visit the area while Serb politicians should visit Osijek and Vinkovci. He added that Vladimir Seks (HDZ, Croatian Democratic Union), Vlado Gotovac (HSLS, Croatian Social Liberal Party), and Milorad Pupovac (a member of Parliament) had already toured the area and held talks with local Serb leaders on political process. According to the UNTAES spokesman, public activities will be organized. Such activities along with appearances on television and radio, round tables and discussions will enable the population to have a free access to every kind of information. Arnold reminded that all in the area knew that the elections would be held under the UNTAES control on the same time on 13 April. He said that the UNTAES radio broadcast on Wednesday the date of the elections and that many people could watch Croatian television there. He stressed that it was most important to ensure that every resident, who wanted his document and who wanted to be listed in voters' registers, had enough time to do that. I believe that we all agree now that this will be possible if elections are held on 13 April, as we would like to be able to confirm that elections are free, just, fair and democratic, the UNTAES spokesman said.
