Kovac visited the companies 'Borovo' and 'Vupik', held talks
with representatives of the Ilok-based companies 'Iteks' and
'Razvitak' and representatives of other companies from the area.
The economic situation in the area was very bad because
companies no longer had credit assets or markets on which they
could place their products, Kovac said.
The company 'Borovo' had 20,000 employees before the
aggression against Croatia and there were only 2,500 to 3,000
employees working currently in the factory. Only one percent of the
company's capacity was being used, Kovac said.
Serb negotiators were aware of the fact that their
'reintegration into Croatia's economic and political system is
unavoidable' and that they themselves had asked for more frequent
contacts, Kovac said.
A new visit to 'Borovo' and the agricultural plant 'Belje' had
been arranged for the following week, Kovac said.
There were some signs that property of local companies was
being stolen, Kovac said, stressing that he had asked UNTAES
representatives to take necessary measures and prevent thefts.
Property in local companies would be listed and those lists
would be compared with those from 1991, he added.
Kovac said that economic reintegration should proceed at a
quicker pace after today's visit and that Croatia would reintegrate
the area in its legal and constitutional system soon.
