The appointment of new ministers - Ivan Penic, Marko
Sirc, Zlatko Dominikovic and Milan Kovac - is to contribute to
further efficient work of the Croatian government and I
believe that they deserve a positive outcome of the vote,
Prime Minister Zlatko Matesa said.
The appointment of Ivan Penic as Interior Minister was
based on his expertise and personal qualities, Matesa said.
He stressed that the former Interior Minister Ivan
Jarnjak, despite speculations on the change in office, had
taken up a very important duty for the overall democratic
development of Croatia.
Explaining the appointment of Marko Sirac as Urban
Development, Construction and Housing Minister and Zlatko
Dominikovic as Privatization and Property Management Minister,
Matesa pointed out their expertise.
Members of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) in the
House would give a vote of confidence to all newly appointed
ministers because they were honourable and expert people who
would perform their duties to the interest of Croatia, MP Ivan
Milas said.
During a short discussion, representatives of opposition
parties in the house opposed the way ministers have been
relieved of duties, saying that every relief of duties and
appointment should be accounted for more thoroughly.
Members of the Croatian Social Liberal Party (HSLS) said
they would oppose the appointment of Penic and relief of
duties of Jarnjak out of principle, saying that it was not
clear why Jarnjak had been relieved of duties.
Members of the social Democratic Party (SDP) will also
take the same stance.
The House of Representatives on Wednesday made a
unanimous decision by which the dormancy of the mandate of
member of the House, Matej Jankovic, formerly Agriculture
Minister, has ceased.
The House established a 39-item agenda. The Bill on
Abortion has been removed from the agenda at the initiation of
the Committee for Labour, Social Politics and Health.
The agenda of the 16th session could be completed with
some new items. President of the Croatian Parliament Vlatko
Pavletic announced that a "Memorandum on Peaceful
Reintegration of Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Srijem
and Letter of Intent following" would be included on the
agenda, as had been asked for by members of the HSLS, after an
authorized text is obtained.
Pavletic announced that another addition on the agenda
would be a discussion about a suggestion of the HSLS that the
House of Representatives discuss the present economic
situation at a thematic session.
