VUKOVAR, July 8 (Hina) - The heavily damaged Vukovar water tower and
demolished building of the railway station will not undergo
reconstruction as previously planned, but will be preserved in
their present state, Vukovar Mayor Vladimir Stengl said on
Wednesday.
The mayor said the water tower and railway station building will be
preserved as testimony to the Serbian aggression on Croatia and the
heroic defence of the town.
It will also help us remember the Peace Train which President Franjo
Tudjman last year symbolically used to mark the completion of the
peaceful reintegration of Vukovar and the Danube river region into
Croatian sovereignty, Stengl told Hina.
The two facilities were to be reconstructed as part of a donors'
project under which every Croatian county was to reconstruct one
major building in the eastern town.
Since the water tower and railway station will no longer be of use to
life in Vukovar, it was decided that they be turned into lasting
monuments testifying to the defence of Vukovar and Croatia, Stengl
said.
