VUKOVAR, June 23 (Hina) - Vukovar Mayor Vladimir Stengl on Tuesday
handed over the keys to a residential building reconstructed with a
$235,000 donation from the Belgian Government.
Twelve flats had been reconstructed in the building and 10
residents received their keys at Tuesday's ceremony in the eastern
Croatian city.
Thanking the Belgian Government for its help, the United Nations
Secretary-General's envoy to Croatia and head of the UN Civil
Police Support Group, Souren Seraydarian, said that very few
families had been involved in the return process, which was
discouraging for those who had waited seven years to return to their
birthplace.
The reason for this is the difficult state of the economy which
needs an urgent revival because without the opening of working
places there obviously will not be any return, Seraydarian said.
He assessed the readiness of international donors to be included in
the renewal of the Danube River region but this would depend on the
implementation of the procedures for the return of refugees and
displaced people.
Seraydarian announced that next week reconstruction of another
residential building in Vukovar would be completed, this one
containing 44 flats.
The Belgian Government has provided aid worth about $6 million in
the Croatian Danube region up to now.
