FISCHER:GOVT RETURN PROGRAMME GOOD STEP TO EUROPEAN INTEGRATION

Autor: ;HA;
( Editorial: --> 4784-- ) VUKOVAR, June 30 (Hina) - The Croatian government's programme for the return of refugees, displaced and exiled persons is a good step towards European integration, the president of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly Leni Fischer said in Vukovar, eastern Croatia, on Tuesday. Fischer said she supported Croatia in its aspiration to enter European integration. Today she met with the president of the National Trust Establishment Committee Vesna Skare-Ozbolt, The majority of difficulties in the Danube river region of eastern Croatia are related to the reconstruction of houses and the revival of economy, Skare-Ozbolt said, emphasising this is the basic condition for the return. There were about 26,000 displaced persons in eastern Croatia following the termination of the United Nations transitional administration in the area (UNTAES) in January, Skare-Ozbolt said, adding half of that figure had returned to other parts of Croatia so far. Vukovar County Prefect Rudolf Koening called on the international community to take part in the reconstruction of eastern Croatia, in particular through loans for small and medium-sized enterprise. "The Serb national community supports the (above-mentioned) return programme, even though it is not comprehensive", the vice president of the National Trust Establishment Committee Vojislav Stanimirovic said. Speaking about yesterday's visit to some refugee camps in Yugoslavia, Stanimirovic said Serb refugees primarily complained of difficulties in obtaining documents necessary for Croatian citizenship. "We visited the Croatian Embassy in Belgrade and I believe it is unacceptable that only 30 requests (for returning to Croatia) per day are admitted. With this tempo people will not have returned in the next five years", said Stanimirovic. Leni Fischer also visited the New Cemetery in Vukovar where exhumations of the remains of 938 victims of Serbian aggression on Vukovar were completed last week. Fischer laid a wreath by the central cross on the Croatian Defenders Boulevard. (hina) ha as 301929 MET jun 98
