SPLIT, Jan 5 (Hina) - Police in the southern Croatian city of Split
said on Monday they had destroyed five trunks containing a total of
75 grenades which had appeared in the sea near the island of Hvar.
The origin of the grenades was not known. It was believed that they
either belonged to the former Yugoslav People's Army (JNA), which
used to have a lot of secret arms depots in the area, or that they
were dumped off Hvar and washed up by the sea.
Split Police Department inspector Ante Baric told Hina that police,
after being alerted by a citizen, had found five incomplete and
partly broken trunks in the cove of Majerovica, three of which were
washed ashore.
