The meeting, organised for the first time in history, is being
attended by the Archbishop of Zagreb, Cardinal Josip Bozanic, in his
capacity as Vice-President of the Council of European Bishops'
Conferences.
The gathering was addressed by European Commission President Romano
Prodi, who once again congratulated the 10 countries that joined the
European Union on May 1.
"One should never forget the faith and the spirit of ecumenism,
tolerance and respect for diversity. That is why religion can breathe
a soul into Europe without which this continent cannot live," Prodi
said.
The meeting is linked by satellite with 151 cities across Europe,
including Zagreb.
