Last Thursday about 300 discontented workers arrived in the square and began demonstrations accusing the current owner of the company 'Finagra', which holds 73 percent of shares in 'Sljeme', of intending to cease the production and close the company after it bought shares from the HFP.
Mesic said he decided to visit the demonstrators after he saw a banner with a message "Mr. President, We Are Also Citizens of This Country!".
After the talks with unionists, Mesic said all those troubles for Croatian workers had started with a wrong model for the privatisation which he said led to "ownership transformation that turned into a disaster".
The head of the government's social partnership office, Vitomir Begovic, said last night that apart from Sljeme employees, there were also another 200 creditors, adding that it was necessary for all of them to reach a deal so as to be compensated.
Another round of talks between the majority owner, government officials and representatives of the employees is scheduled for today.
