The exercise was organised by countries signatories to the US-Adriatic Charter. Delegations from Hungary, Great Britain, Canada, Germany, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia and Montenegro are participating as observers.
The national coordinator of the exercise is the commander of the Croatian Navy Fleet, Commodore Ivica Tolic.
The aim of the exercise is to advance cooperation among the countries participating in ARIEX 06, and to create channels and patterns of conduct based on which timely estimates will be made of the degree of danger from means of mass destruction, and later of the capability of effectively reacting to such danger.
The participants' task is to cooperate in uncovering radioactive cargo which crosses Croatia's territorial waters on its way to Western Europe.
The exercise is also expected to show the degree of coordination among the departments of Croatian services participating in ARIEX 06.
Participating on Croatia's side are the ministries of defence, foreign affairs and European integration, finance, tourism, transport and development, and the interior, as well as the Counterintelligence Agency, the State Bureau for Nuclear Safety, and the State Bureau for Protection from Radiation.
The central part of the exercise, to be held on Wednesday, will be attended by senior Croatian and foreign guests.
