ZAGREB, March 22 (Hina) - The Croatian Government's Office for Gender Equality on Wednesday warned the manager of the national broadcaster HRT, Mirko Galic, about the case of an interpreter for deaf persons who was sacked from the HRT's department for religious programmes because she divorced.

The Law on Gender Equality explicitly forbids discrimination based on marital or family status, the Office said, adding that discrimination based on a person's marital status in relation to the termination of her/his work contract was also prohibited by the Labour Act.

In a letter to Galic the Office said it expected the HRT to withdraw the decision on sacking Dubravka Naumovski because she divorced and to eliminate all forms of discrimination.

The editor of the Croatian Television's religion department Tonci Trstenjak last week sacked Naumovski saying that she had left her children and husband for another man, thus becoming unfit to interpret religious programmes for deaf people.

Trstenjak's decision was also condemned by the leading opposition party, the Social Democrats.
