ZAGREB, March 14 (Hina) - A dead swan found on a backwater of the
Danube near the village of Draz in eastern Croatia has been infected with a
lethal strain of bird flu, the spokesman for the Croatian Agriculture, Mladen
Pavic, said on Tuesday. The swan was found at the said location last
week, and an analysis of its tissue shows that it had H5N1.
The location is not a bird reserve and the wild swan in question is
believed to have come "from other directions", said Pavic who did not rule out
a possibility that the bird had flown from Serbia or Hungary.
The spokesman again called on local households to stick to preventive
measures which the ministry earlier ordered, including the keeping of domestic
poultry indoors.
