The head of the local committee in charge of monitoring and preventing avian influenza, Ivica Kovacevic, told reporters that 570 head of poultry, mainly chickens, had been killed and properly buried by three veterinary teams.
"If any household was overlooked, which is possible, the culling will be done there at a later date," Kovacevic added.
No incidents were recorded, and all the owners will be compensated for the lost profits according to local market prices.
About five kilometres from the nature park there are three poultry farms, each having about 500 head of poultry. Their owners have been ordered to step up the necessary sanitary measures.
The government has issued an order for all the poultry within a 10-km radius of the affected site to be kept indoors. Failure to abide by the order carries a fine of up to KN20,000 (approximately EUR2,700).
