Masked groups from all over Croatia as well as Italy, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro, and Japan took part in the final part of the Rijeka Carnival.
According to figures from the Rijeka Tourism Board, about 1,500 people from Croatia and abroad came to the northern Adriatic city to watch the carnival, which officially closes on Wednesday.
One of the main events of the carnival, which was first held in 1982, was the carnival diplomats' ball held on Saturday evening, with about 500 masked guests from Croatia and abroad in attendance.
Diplomatic and consular representatives of other countries were presented in the official part of the evening's programme and were later welcomed by Rijeka Mayor Vojko Obersnel.
In attendance, among others, were the ambassadors of Denmark, India, Indonesia, Israel, South Africa, Romania, the Unites States, Serbia and Montenegro, Spain, and Sweden, as well as the president of the European Federation of Carnival Cities, Henry van der Kroon, Croatia's Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, and representatives of friendly cities Este, Italy, Rostock, Germany, Kawasaki, Japan, and Csepel, Hungary.
Money raised from tickets to the ball and donations will go to charity.
