Jakovcic: IDS to seek autonomy for Istria once Croatia joins EU

PULA, Feb 14 (Hina) - The Istrian Democratic Party (IDS) will raise the issue of autonomy for Istria if Croatia remains highly centralised after joining the European Union and if it fails to respect its constitution which provides for a relatively high degree of county autonomy, IDS leader Ivan Jakovcic said in Pula on Tuesday.

Speaking at a press conference marking the 16th anniversary of the party's foundation, Jakovcic said that raising the issue before Croatia's accession to the European Union would be damaging to the country.

"The IDS does not want to do damage to the policies of President Mesic or any government and does not want to go against the national interests and stop Croatia's entry into the European Union," he said.

Jakovcic said that political forces in Europe opposing Croatia's EU entry would certainly try to use the IDS's demand for their own ends if the issue were raised before Croatia joined the bloc, and called on the government to translate the constitution into a law "because that way the counties will achieve an enviable degree of regional autonomy".

"By ignoring the constitution, the central government shows that it does not want to share power at local levels, and this is the policy of both the present and the previous government," Jakovcic said, adding that in that way the counties would become "active political factors" in Croatia as opposed to their present status as observers.

Commenting on the proposal by Slovene President Janez Drnovsek, that before a final settlement to the sea border dispute is reached a temporary solution should be introduced under which 80 per cent of the Bay of Savudrija would belong to Slovenia and the rest to Croatia, Jakovcic said that this was unacceptable.

"For us, the border runs along the middle of the Bay of Savudrija, and we demand that all relevant authorities in Croatia treat this problem accordingly until its resolution, which can be achieved only through arbitration," he said.
