ZAGREB, Feb 24 (Hina) - Croatian border police officers went on strike on Friday demanding a pay rise. The police trade union said that 75 percent of staff participated in the strike, while the Interior Ministry estimated their number at between 25 and 30 percent.

Some 75 percent of employees were on strike at border crossings today, police union president Dubravko Jagic told Hina, expressing satisfaction with the turnout.

Civil servants' unions began a work-to-rule at 0800 hours Friday. The strike ended at 1600 hours. Members of the customs officers' trade union did not join the strike.

Police officers strictly applied rules when checking cars and passengers crossing the border. Although such action could have caused traffic jams at the busiest border crossings such as Bregana, Macelj, Rupa, Donji Miholjac and Bajakovo, no delays were reported.

Interior Ministry staff working at desks for issuance of documents and licences, tax administration employees, and workers in the judiciary and state administration offices will go on strike on Monday and Tuesday.

The four trade unions demand a 300 kuna pay raise so that the salaries of civil servants could be equalised with the other salaries paid from the state budget,

The government said that this issue would be addressed by a new Salaries Act, whose enforcement is to begin at the start of 2007. It also said that the time spent on strike would not be paid.
