ZAGREB, Feb 24 (Hina) - Four trade unions of civil servants on Friday morning began a strike at border crossings.

The three-day strike started at 0800 hrs Friday and will today last until 1600 hrs. Members of customs officers' trade union have not joint this industrial action.

Police officers and other employees who went on strike said that they would strictly apply rules when checking cars and passengers crossing the border. This can cause traffic jams at the busiest border crossings such as Bregana, Macelj, Rupa, Donji Miholjac and Bajakovo.

On Monday and Tuesday employees in the Interior Ministry, who work at desks for issuance of documents and licences, tax administration employees, and workers in the judiciary and state administration offices will go on strike.

The four trade unions insist on a pay rise of 300 kuna so that the salaries of civil servants may be equalised with the other salaries paid from the state budget,

The government said that this issue would be addressed by a new Salaries Act, whose enforcement is to begin with the start of 2007.

The Ivo Sanader cabinet has said that time spent on the strike would not be paid.
