Presidents on possibility of stripping Glavas of medals

Autor: mses
ZAGREB, Aug 9 (Hina) - In response to reporters' questions when he will strip Branimir Glavas of medals and decorations, Croatian President Ivo Josipovic has said he has not yet received the final verdict against Glavas, and that upon its receipt he will check whether all legal conditions are met to act in that direction.

Every state including Croatia must function by applying its laws, Josipovic said after the opening of an international conference of medicine and law which began in Zagreb on Monday. He stressed that he would act only in accordance with the law.

Reporters asked the president about the possible developments after the Supreme Court recently upheld guilty verdicts against Glavas and another five people for war crimes committed in Osijek in 1991.

Glavas, a member of the Croatian parliament, is sentenced to eight years in prison.

Immediately after the verdict against Glavas was upheld by the Supreme Court, the Zagreb County Court forwarded the Supreme Court ruling to all parties to the proceedings and to the parliament's Credentials and Privileges Commission, the parliamentary body in charge of immunity-related matters which stripped Glavas of immunity as member of parliament.

Josipovic also expressed satisfaction with the excellent organisation of the traditional lancing tournament in Sinj over the last weekend, describing the Alka event as a part of the Croatian heritage which will make Croatia recognisable.

The president said he was also happy to see the successful ongoing tourist season.
