Human Rights Ombudsman's report backed by Opposition, criticised by HDZ

Autor: mses
ZAGREB, June 10 (Hina) - A report on the work of Human Rights Ombudsman Jurica Malcic in 2009, which was presented in parliament on Thursday, received the support of the Opposition while the club of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) only took note of it, claiming that it was based on the ombudsman's personal impressions and blanket assessments.

Responding to the report, the government dismissed the ombudsman's assessment that the politicisation of office-holders was one of the causes of clientelism and political corruption in the country.

Malcic warned that the state administration had not yet been depoliticised.

Speaking on behalf of the HDZ caucus, Ana Lovrin recalled that in 2007 the government moved amendments to the law on civil servants which she said completely freed the state administration of political influence.

She said that the report was based on Malcic's personal impressions rather than on facts.

Opposition MPs said the government should accept criticism from the Human Rights Ombudsman and start dealing with the problems he had identified.
