Sabor reduces privileged pensions, amends additional health insurance legislation

Autor: mses
ZAGREB, May 28 (Hina) - The Croatian parliament on Friday passed a law reducing by 10 percent privileged pensions exceeding HRK 3,500.

The law will go into force on 1 July, which means that some 90,000 budget beneficiaries will receive reduced pensions as of August.

The move will not apply to the pensions of 100-percent disabled war veterans, miners who worked in the Tupljak coal mine, and people who were exposed to asbestos in their workplace.

The legislation is to save HRK 250 million in this year's budget, HRK 610 million in the 2011 budget and HRK 620 million in the 2012 budget.

Lawmakers also amended the legislation on voluntary health insurance, introducing means test for free-of-charge additional health insurance.

A law on the Croatian Red Cross was adopted.

Lawmakers endorsed several reports, including on the enforcement of the law on access to information in 2009, an annual report on the use of EU pre-accession funds, on the readiness of the national defence system, on budget execution in 2009 as well as on the work of the gender equality ombudswoman in 2009.

The parliament postponed the adoption of amendments to golf courses legislation due to a lack of quorum after opposition MPs walked out.

The parliament will resume its session on 9 June.
