Generals Enver Hadzihasanovic and Mehmed Alagic and Lt. Col. Amir
Kubura were arrested on Thursday by the authorities of Bosnia's
Croat-Muslim federation, the UN tribunal said in a statement.
The prosecutor's office has charged them on commanding
responsibility for violations of the laws and customs of war and
serious violations of the Geneva conventions committed by killing
and harassing, causing excessive suffering, destruction, and other
crimes.
Hadzihasanovic was commander of the BH Army Third Corps, which
covered Central Bosnia. Alagic was commander of the Third Corps
Operative Group before succeeding Hadzihasanovic as corps
commander.
Kubura was commander of the seventh Muslim brigade, which included
Mujahedeens. The tribunal statement says they committed the most
heinous and most brutal crimes.
The crimes the three former commanders have been charged with
include executions and massacres committed following attacks on
towns and villages in Central Bosnia, as well as crimes against
captives, including killing, harassing, and using them to dig
trenches and as human shield.
The indictment was approved on July 13. The statement does not
specify where the sites of the crimes.
Hadzihasanovic and Kubura testified before the Hague tribunal two
years ago as witnesses in the trial of the commander of the Central
Bosnia Operative Zone, Tihomir Blaskic.
Plans are being made to transfer the three officials to
Scheveningen prison at The Hague. The tribunal is expected to
disclose the indictments soon.
