Prices took a downturn at the outset after the London cocoa market racked up losses overnight. Active March managed to pierce near-term chart support at $1,370 a tonne, but traders said manufacturer-linked buying toward the lows prevented further losses. Traders said news that UK-based PCR Ltd managing director Robert Fish said Thursday the Ivory Coast's total cocoa production in the 1996/97 season is likely to be at least one million tonnes may have weighed on the market. "I think London may have pulled back on the forecast and we followed them down," one trader said. At 1215 EST, March futures were down $10 a tonne, at $1,370, ranging from $1,375 to $1,367. May was $8 lower at $1,394, while the rest were $4 to $6 weaker. On the charts, near-term support was seen at $1,362-$1,367 in the March contract, while resistance was pegged at $1,375-$1,380.
