Dealers said speculative and trade shortcovering in New York accounted for most of the day's gains, triggering buy stops near $1,385 a tonne for March delivery and driving it to a peak of $1,399, just shy of key psychological resistance at $1,400. March delivery ended $17 higher at $1,397 after sinking to a low of $1,372 early. Spot December rose $4 to $1,335, while the outer months finished up $17. A sharp decline in Sterling against the dollar pressured the market from the outset, traders said, as arbitrage favored sterling-denominated London cocoa. But after Sterling retraced some of its losses, traders said the currency-linked selling dried up, spurring market participants to cover their short positions. Technically, traders pegged near-term March resistance at $1,404, then $1,410 and $1,425. Support was seen near $1,390. On the fundamental front, shipments from Ivory Coast's Abidjan and San Pedro ports are estimated to have risen to around 120,000 tonnes by end-November, Ivorian shippers and exporters said. Official statistics for October and November are not yet available. Volume was moderate, at an estimated 7,264 lots.
