Some dealers said today's "outside range key reversal" -- trading below Monday's low but closing above the high -- could signal a possible near-term trend reversal. But other traders said despite today's upswing market sentiment remained toward the bearish side. "Fundamentally, the market is neutral to bearish. We are right in the middle of harvest with no major disruption in supplies," one trader said. Technically, it is sideways to bearish." Most-active March cocoa ended $20 a tonne higher, at $1,378, after ranging between $1,379 and $1,352. Spot December ended up $23, to $1,334, while the back months rose $23 to $24. Traders said the market headed lower at the outset on the heels of London's slump to near eight-month lows. But disappointed shorts covered their positions after New York's March contract failed to breach $1,350 support. The New York market was also aided by continued strength in the British sterling, which may have prompted some arbitrage buying of cheaper dollar-denominated CSCE futures, traders said. On the charts, Refco Inc analyst Ann Prendergast said the March contract would need to breach $1,388-$1,389 resistance to generate a real rally, while last week's low of $1,342 would provide strong support. "I am cautious about the market unless it can break above $1,389," said Prendergast. "There is perceived ample supply in the near-term, so I don't have a lot of faith in it rising dramatically." Prendergast said the market is likely to trade sideways between $1,390 and $1,340 until fresh fundamentals emerged. Volume was moderate, at an estimated 7,928 lots. 201034 MET nov 96
