CSCE cocoa ends broadly lower in thin volume
NEW YORK, Dec 2 (Reuter) - CSCE cocoa futures ended
broadly lower Monday after an early bout of selling by
speculators and the trade, but the market managed to pare its
losses ahead of the close, dealers said.
Taking its cue from weakness on the London cocoa market,
New York opened sharply lower, quickly sinking toward support
at $1,394 a tonne.
Scale-down industry buying staved off further losses,
dealers said, as did continued strength in the British pound.
With sterling edging to a four-year high against the U.S.
dollar, European manufacturers looked to pick up positions in
the cheaper New York market.
"The weakness in London made New York move $10-15 lower
early, but the dollar saved us a little bit," said one.
New York's benchmark March contract fell $16 a tonne on
the day, to close at $1,400. Second-month May yielded $15, at
$1,421, with some light selling noted on the switch.
After a brisk start to the session, the market quickly
turned quiet, with a sluggish 5,007 lots exchanged on the day.
Technically, March's ability to hold $1,393 was seen as
mildly constructive, but key resistance awaited at $1,404 and
$1,425, a six-week high set last week. A move to the downside
would likely trigger stops below $1,385, followed by
$1,350-1,354.
Meanwhile, traders said they were watching developments in
a confectionary workers' strike in Germany, a key cocoa
consuming country.
While there were few signs as yet that manufacturers had
scaled back buying, traders warned that the industry, already
made wary by sterling's extended rally against the mark, would
be increasingly reluctant to build inventory if the strike
persisted.
