Traders cited shortcovering by funds and commission houses and bargain hunting by the manufacturing sector. Most-active March delivery stayed on the plus side throughout the day, ending $9 higher at $1,369 a tonne. Spot December rose the same to $1,327. But traders said further gains would prove difficult. The market's failure to fill in crucial chart gaps just above today's highs may in fact trigger a reversal back to the recent lows, they said. March set an intraday peak of $1,375, but would need to clear at the $1,378-1,382 range to attract significant new buying, they said. A slight narrowing of the London-New York arbitrage, as the British pound pulled back from its recent highs against the U.S. dollar, was seen adding to the overhead resistance, traders said.
