Benchmark December futures rose $16 a tonne on the day, to $1,367, while second-position March gained $15 to $1,395. December set an early high of $1,373, just below key resistance at $1,374-1,375, before scaling back. Speculators accounted for most of the early buying, though some trade interest was also noted. The overall structure was little changed on the day, though steady buying on the nearby switches briefly narrowed the contango. Today's run-up appeared to be mainly a technical consolidation following poor performance, traders said. But unexpectedly strong European third-quarter grind figures released last Friday provided some long-awaited fundamental impetus. "We saw some short covering in response to the very good grinds that were put out last week," said one trader. U.K. third-quarter grindings leapt by 42 percent compared with the same year-ago period, while the Dutch processing rate climbed 16 percent. Traders said German grind numbers due out later this week should confirm the stronger trend, as a cooler summer across Europe and the U.S. gave cocoa consumption a boost. Grindings for the U.S. are slated for release October 18. But whatever the remaining grind numbers show, their effect on the market may be short-lived, as traders turn their attention back to upcoming harvest. Early estimates of the 1996/97 world supply balance have varied rather widely, heightening uncertainty and draining liquidity from the market, traders said. "There is so much uncertainty with respect to last year's crop and this year's crop...that I think the market is going to head sideways for a while," a trader said. Volume on the exchange was estimated at 5,161 lots. 081035 MET oct 96
