In merinos, 19 micron was 5.0 percent cheaper, while 20 mm was three percent cheaper and 21 mm was two percent cheaper. Merino skirtings of 19 and 21 mm were two percent cheaper and 20 mm was three percent cheaper. Crossbreds were cheaper, with the exception of 31 mm which was unchanged. WI said most interest came from Japan and Western Europe with support from other sectors. Of the 26,266 bales offered, 15.7 percent were passed in, WI said. Several mills reported that buyer resistance to any increase in prices continued to keep a stranglehold on profit margins. Despite signs of an improvement in demand from Japan and interest from China remaining fairly constant, there were few reports of new business. One market source said impending seasonal increases in the size of raw wool offerings was likely to reinforce "highly cautious buying". 031030 MET oct 96
